Habits

Four habits that change what you eat without asking you to have more willpower than you have. Each one edits the environment or the identity, not the effort.

👁

Keep healthy food in plain sight and unhealthy food out of sight.

Choice architecture beats willpower. Food visible on a counter is eaten several times more often than the same food inside an opaque container — you are editing the number of decisions you have to win, not trying to win them harder.

💧

When hunger hits, drink water first.

Thirst and early hunger share overlapping signals, and gastric stretch alone lowers appetite for the next 20-30 minutes. It costs nothing to test, and it tells you whether you were actually hungry.

🥄

Use a very small spoon so you cannot shovel.

Smaller utensils slow the rate of intake, and satiety signalling from the gut takes roughly 20 minutes to arrive. Eating slower means the signal lands before the plate is empty rather than after.

🧠

Change your identity: you are someone who eats well.

Identity-based habits outlast outcome-based ones. “I don't drink soft drinks” ends the negotiation; “I'm trying to cut down” restarts it every single time you are offered one.

Why these four and not forty. A short list you actually run beats a long list you read once. Each of these is a one-time setup — move the jar, buy the small spoon — rather than a daily decision you have to keep winning.
