Who to actually trust on Indian food

Ten sources and ten channels that publish their working: the databases a claim can be checked against, the scanners that read a label for you in the shop, the regulators behind the paperwork, and the people who do this in public. None of them paid to be here and none of these links is an affiliate link — where one of them sells something, the entry says so.

Databases worth bookmarking

Where most of the proof links on this site lead. All three publish their working.

Unbox HealthRates packaged Indian food on what is actually inside the pack, sorted by rating. The fastest way to sanity-check a product before you buy it.Product ratingsTrustifiedSends supplements and packaged food to accredited labs and publishes the pass/fail reports in full. Many of the proof links on this site point here.Independent lab testingOnly What's NeededA clean-label directory built on the principle that an ingredient list should be short enough to read out loud. Good for finding no-additive alternatives.Clean-label directory

Scan a pack while you are standing in the shop

Point a phone at a barcode and get the label read back to you. Useful precisely at the moment a decision is made, which is not at a desk.

FactsScanScan an Indian packaged-food barcode and get a 0-100 score with an A-E grade, an additive-by-additive ingredient breakdown with risk levels, and better-rated alternatives whenever a product lands at C or below.Label scannerTruthInRates a product from its label and ingredient list alone, and names the specific concerns rather than reducing them to one number. Its advisory board includes Revant Himatsingka, whose channel is further down this page.Label scannerOpen Food Facts (Android)The scanner app for the open, community-audited database that every “label data” proof link on this site points at. Anyone can edit it — which is why coverage is broad, and why it is worth checking who entered a given product before leaning on it.Open databaseHealthifyMe (Android)Has the deepest Indian home-food database in a consumer app, so it can weigh a roti and a katori of dal rather than only packaged goods. It is also the one commercial product on this page: it sells coaching subscriptions, so treat its nudges as marketing and its food database as the useful part.Portion tracker

The official bodies behind the proof

A lab report, a licence number and a complaint all trace back to one of these three. Worth knowing which does what before you need them.

FSSAIThe food regulator itself — standards, licensing, recalls and Eat Right India. Every FSSAI number printed on a pack can be looked up in its FoSCoS database, which is where the licence proof links on this site go.RegulatorNABLAccredits the testing laboratories themselves. A lab report only means something if the lab is accredited for that particular test — this is where you verify that, including for the labs behind the Trustified reports cited throughout this site.Lab accreditationDepartment of Consumer AffairsWhere a misleading label or advertisement actually gets reported instead of just screenshotted. The National Consumer Helpline (1915) and the e-Daakhil filing portal both run from here.Complaints
